Department of Arts & Social Science

The Department of Arts and Social Sciences is one of the prominent departments coming under the Faculty of Sciences, Humanities and Languages.

It is a vibrant academic hub which develops intellectual curiosity and critical inquiry among the students. This department offers a diverse range of programmes like, B. A., M. A. and PhD in History, Sociology, Political Science and Economics. It also offers, D. Lib., B. Lib., M. Lib. And PhD in Library and Information Science. Further, this department also offers B. A. Psychology and B. A. Social Work to provide the ample opportunities for the students to choose their career in various subjects. To follow the NEP 2020, the department is offering multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, vocational, skill enhancement, Ability Enhancement, VAC, MOOC, Minor and Major courses. The department provides students with a well-rounded understanding of society, culture, governance, and economic systems. The students from different backgrounds, regions, religions and diverse societies are making it as an example of composite culture.

Our research thrust areas are Historiography, colonialism, regional history of Punjab, nationalism, oral traditions, partition studies, governance, regional and contemporary politics, democracy, international relations, public policy, political ideologies, development economics, behavioural economics, environmental economics, monetary policies, global trade,social stratification, gender studies, cultural sociology, migration, urbanization, digital archiving, metadata management, information retrieval, knowledge organization, and open-access publishing.

Through a combination of classroom learning, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary discussions, and research-driven initiatives, students gain critical thinking abilities and practical insights that prepare them for diverse career paths in academia, policymaking, social work, etc. The department has already produced a number of private and government employees, who are serving in the various sectors across the globe.
