Sports Day

On August 29, 2024, the Department of Education Guru Kashi University successfully organized a sports event entitled as Heritage Sports Fiesta which aimed at fostering physical fitness, teamwork, and enthusiasm among students. The event, held at the New Sports Complex, Guru Kashi University, featured a series of Traditional Punjabi games, competitive and fun-filled activities, including the 100 meters race, spoon race, sack race, Kabaddi, Gilli Danda and Satoliya. This report provides a detailed overview of the event's organization, execution, and outcomes. The primary objectives of the sports event were to promote physical activity among students, encourage healthy competition, and enhance social interactions within the educational community. To ensure the smooth execution of the event, a comprehensive planning process was undertaken:
- Venue Selection: The New Sports Complex of the university was chosen for its adequate facilities, including a well-maintained track for running events and open spaces for other activities.
- Scheduling: The event was scheduled for August 29, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
- Resources and Equipment: Essential equipment, including starting blocks, race markers, spoons, and sacks, was procured. Additionally, volunteers were recruited to assist with various roles such as registration, timekeeping, and event management.
The event commenced with an opening ceremony at 9:30 AM, which included a welcome speech by Dr. Kavita Rani, Head of the Department of Education, followed by an official ribbon-cutting ceremony. The ceremony was attended by students and teachers setting a positive and enthusiastic tone for the day's activities.
Event Activities
The sports event featured three main activities: the 100 meters race, spoon race, and sack race. Some traditional Punjabi games like Kabaddi, Gilli Danda and Satoliya Each activity was designed to challenge participants' speed, coordination, and agility.
100 Meters Race:
- Format: The race was conducted in heats based on age groups and gender to ensure fairness.
- Execution: Participants lined up at the starting blocks, and races were conducted with official timekeepers recording results.
- Results: The top three finishers in each heat were awarded medals, and the winners were celebrated during the award ceremony
Spoon Race:
- Format: Participants balanced a spoon with a lemon on it while running a short distance.
- Execution: The race was conducted in a single round format, with competitors vying to complete the course without dropping the ball.
- Results: The fastest and most precise participants were recognized and awarded for their balance and speed.
Sack Race
- Format: Participants hopped to the finish line while inside large sacks.
- Execution: The race was organized in heats, with competitors starting in sacks and racing to the finish line.
- Results: Winners were determined based on speed and agility, with medals awarded to the top performers. Participants balanced a spoon with a lemon on it while running a short distance.
Apart from the above competition some traditional games like Kabaddi, Gilli Danda, and Satoliya showcased their vibrant cultural heritage. Kabaddi featured intense, fast-paced action as teams engaged in strategic raiding and defending, highlighting agility and teamwork. Gilli Danda entertained participants with its blend of skill and precision, as players used a danda to hit a small wooden piece, aiming for distance and accuracy. Satoliya, or Pitthu, brought lively competition with its combination of ball skills and strategy, as teams knocked down and rebuilt a stack of stones while trying to avoid being tagged. Each game fostered camaraderie and celebrated regional traditions.
The sports event organized by the Department of Education on August 29, 2024, was a resounding success, achieving its goals of promoting physical fitness and fostering community spirit among students.
